SST COURSES
Based on NYC Local Law 196 of 2017, workers are now required to have 40 hours and supervisors are required to have 62 hours of safety training. NextWave Safety is approved by the NYC DOB to deliver SST training courses and issue SST cards. Our SST training offering includes the following courses: 8-Hour Fall Prevention, 2-Hour Drug & Alcohol Awareness, 8-Hour Chapter 33, 4-Hour Supported Scaffold, all 2-Hour Supervisor courses, and most general and specialized electives.
The NYC DOB is always updating its requirements for safety certifications in New York City, so it’s vital to ensure that you’re up to date on all training requirements, including Local Law 196. You can count on NextWave Safety for your SST courses and cards!
WHAT IS REQUIRED SST TRAINING?
Local Law 196 of 2017 requires certain workers to receive 40 hours and supervisors to receive 62 hours of safety training.
Who needs an SST card?
All workers at job sites that are required to designate a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator or Site Safety Manager.
All supervisors at these job sites must also be trained. This includes Site Safety Managers, Site Safety Coordinators, Concrete Safety Managers, Construction Superintendents, and competent persons.
SST compliance is now required to receive DOB building permits. Furthermore, for each untrained worker or supervisor, the DOB will issue a violation with a civil penalty of $5,000 to each the site owner, permit holder, and the employer, for a total of $15,000 in fines per untrained worker. Finally, permit holders that fail to maintain an on-site training log can be fined $2,500 per site.

8 Hour Fall Prevention
The leading cause of death in the construction industry is from falls. As a result, construction workers must have fall protection when working at a height of six feet or more. In addition, employers must provide a Fall Protection training program to all construction workers who might be exposed to fall hazards. This course describes the standards, hazards, and hazard controls that can be used to protect the health and safety of construction workers. This course will provide the participants with an overview of state-of-the-art technology for fall protection and current OSHA requirements, including the principles of fall protection, the components of fall arrest systems, the limitations of fall arrest equipment, and OSHA policies regarding fall protection. Course Objectives: Identify various types of fall protection and their components; Recognize fall hazards and identify abatement methods for fall hazards; Define the proper use of fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems.

2 Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Heath, the construction industry has the highest of workplace drug use. Substance abuse is a factor in 35 percent injuries and fatalities, 35 percent of all substances, 38 percent to 50 percent of all worker’s compensation claims, and 40 percent of thefts. Substance abuse is increasing those risks which affect overall job safety and work efficiency. Substance abuse includes, but not limited to the use of marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, methamphetamine, cocaine, opiates, amphetamine and high amounts of alcohol. The program’s goal is to address substance and alcohol abuse, particularly focuses on educating workers on safety and productivity hazards created by the abuse of alcohol and other drugs in the workplace.

8 Hour Chapter 33 (Site Safety Refresher)
This course focuses on a comprehensive approach to the management of a construction site and discusses the NYC DOB Building Codes set forth in Chapter 33. The main objective of this course is to emphasize the importance of safety and protection of the public and workers on and around a jobsite. 4 Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher
This course explains the basic elements of supported scaffold safety and introduces students to the nature of supported scaffold hazards. During the course emphasis is placed on the role of the scaffold user in accident prevention, which includes scaffold inspections, fall protection, recognizing hazards, and responding to emergencies.

2 Hour Site Safety Plan
In this 2 Hour Site Safety Plan course you will learn to identify safety hazards associated with the project work scope, project tasks and specific safety procedures. This course will provide an introduction to the general requirements for Site Safety Plans per NYC’s Building Code and Local Law 81 of 2017. The course will explain when a Site Safety Plan is required and cover the minimum content that must be provided in those plans.

2 Hour Pre-Task Safety Meetings
During this 2 Hour Pre-Task Meeting course students will learn the purpose and proper presentation of pre-task meetings and become aware of administrative regulatory requirements associated with pre-task meetings and record keeping. Trainees will learn about the necessity of having a Pre-Task Meeting. We will define and list the roles and responsibilities of Competent Person. and explain the context of a pre-task meeting and that such meetings flow from a more formal plan known as a job hazard analysis.
