Virtual Course Delivery Policies & Protocols

NextWave Academy is pleased to offer Virtual Instructor-Led Courses for a wide range of OSHA, NYC Department of Buildings, FDNY, and other safety and health courses through the Zoom platform.

General information:

Virtual instructor-led courses are a method of course delivery that takes place in a virtual environment. The instructor and the learners are located in different places but connect in real time and direct interaction to effectively simulate a traditional classroom setting.

NextWave’s virtual classes are delivered using the Zoom platform, a widely recognized tool that is familiar to many users. This ensures an easy and accessible experience for our learners so that they are best able to focus on the training content, and not on learning new tools or techniques.

Technical requirements:

Our Zoom-based delivery helps to keep the barrier of technical requirements low, as it can be accessed by most devices and browsers. Participants will need a minimum of a device (computer, smartphone, tablet) and the following:

  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G/4G/5G LTE)
  • Speakers and a microphone – built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam or HD webcam – built-in or USB plug-in

For questions about whether your device meets our technical requirements, see the full list of Zoom System Requirements

Instructor responsibilities:

  1. Start and host Zoom class sessions according to the established start and end times.
  2. Assist students entering the virtual course and reviewing NextWave virtual course policies at the beginning of each course.
  3. Provide necessary links for registration, course assessments, and evaluation.
  4. Provide reasonable accommodation for breaks and meals.

Student responsibilities:

  1. Attend ALL virtual training hours.
  2. Complete a registration form for each course (or mark each course on one registration form)
  3. Ensure your camera is functioning and ON so that your video feed is consistent throughout the training.
  4. Complete the course assessment with a score of 70% or higher
  5. Complete the course from a safe and stable location. Do not join a virtual course while in transit and especially not while driving or operating a vehicle.

If a student is unable or unwilling to meet these responsibilities, they will not be able to complete the course as delivered in this format and will therefore not receive a certificate of completion. There will be no refund for students who register for and partially complete a course. It is up to the discretion of the course provider as to whether a student will be allowed to restart the course at no additional charge.

Digital forms & assessments:

To facilitate virtual courses we have implemented digital methods of registration, assessment, and evaluation.

  • Students can access the registration form by web link prior to taking the courses, or a QR code found at the beginning of each course presentation.
  • End-of-class evaluations will also be accessed via QR code or a web link posted in the Zoom chat.
  • Assessments will be distributed via a web link posted in the Zoom chat. These exams will be administered using ClassMarker, which automatically collects, grades, and returns results to the students and instructor.

Best Practices & Tips:

  • Charge your device prior to course start or connect to a power source
  • Ensure a consistent WiFi connection
  • Test your camera and microphone prior to course start
